How To Write An Effective Marketing Email

When it comes to selling products and services online there is nothing quite as effective as email. Email has become a primary form of communication for most of us and all the more so for those who are regularly online. But let’s face it – we all receive tons of email everyday. What can you do to stand-out amongst the clutter? Here’s a few tips to help you get the most out of your marketing emails.

1. Have a compelling subject line.

If you’re mail doesn’t get opened – it’s not going to get read. Most people won’t even open an email if they think there’s a chance it’s spam. To get your emails open you’re going to need a compelling subject line. Try to keep your subject lines, brief and to the point but don’t be afraid to make it just mysterious enough for someone to want to read more.

2. Keep it short

Most people are going to skim over emails after opening them and decide whether their important or not. If your email is long most people will not spend the time reading through it. Try to keep your emails to about three bullet points and get straight to the point.

3. Have one call to action

Now that your email is be read it’s important you have a single call to action. Ask yourself what you’d like the customer to do after reading your email. Do you want them to click on a link? Do you want them to reply to the email? Do you want them to call your company? Ask them very clearly to do one thing within that email.

How To Accept Credit Card Payments Online

If you’re new to selling online you may not be aware of all the in and outs of taking credit card payments over the internet. In this article I’ll give a brief explanation of how accepting credit card payments online work and warn of some of the pitfalls.

Accepting Credit Card Payments Will Cost You Money

The first thing you need to know about accepting credit card payments online is that it will cost you money whether you process a single transaction or not. The credit card processing business is made up of several layers of service providers and each of them is out to get a cut. If fact, to accept credit card payments online you should expect to spend a minimum of $25 each month.

Credit Card Fees.

There are several different fees you can expect to see on your monthly statement when accepting credit cards.  Here is a handful of the most common fees and what you can expect to pay. Keep in mind these fees pertain to online transactions. The rates are typically lower when you’re processing charges with the credit card present.

  • Discount Rate (typically 2-2.5% of each transaction)
  • Per Transaction Fees (typically 20-40 cents per transaction)
  • Statement Fees ($5-$12 per month)
  • Chargeback Fees ($10-$25 per chargeback)

Discount Rate

The discount rate is a percentage your credit card processor takes from each transaction. For example: If a customer buys my product online and it cost $10 and my discount rate is 2.5% my fee would equal 25 cents.

Many card processing companies promise super competitive rates but get you on what are called “Non-Qualifying” rates. These are discount rates for what your card processor considers to be Non-Qualifying transactions. Typically this would be a corporate card, rewards card, or international transaction. Beware: These rates are typically over 1% more than your standard discount rate.

Per Transaction Fees

In addition to your discount rate you’ll also be charged a flat fee for each transaction. This fee should be 20 to 40 cents per transaction. So on the same $10 transaction mentioned above you’ll have to tack on another 20 to 40 cents.

Statement Fees

Many times credit card processors are willing to waive customer service and statement fees as long as your total fees end up being more than a monthly minimum. Typically this minimum is between $15 and $25.

Chargeback Fees

Chargeback fees are incurred when a transaction is reported by the card holder as fraudulent or if the card holder made the purchase and feels they’ve been duped. Chargebacks can be a real pain for your online business. When a customer files a chargeback not only is the amount of the original transaction but they also deduct a chargeback fee. Chargeback fees can be upwards of $25 or more.
